Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (Subclass 457)

The subclass 457 visa ​​​​​ lets a skilled worker travel to Australia to work in their nominated occupation for their approved sponsor for up to four years.

A business can sponsor a skilled worker from other countries to fill the required position. According to the Consolidated Sponsored Occupations List, any business can sponsor skilled labor if it is not able to find an appropriately skilled Australian citizen or permanent resident to fill that position.

Visa Basic Requirements:

  • are sponsored by an employer to fill a nominated skilled position
  • have skills, qualifications, experience and an employment background that match those required for the position
  • speak a certain level of English
  • are eligible for any relevant licences or registration required for the nominated position
  • have health insurance

Visa Entitlement:

This visa allows you to:

  • work in Australia for a defined period of time
  • bring members of your family unit to work or study in Australia
  • travel in and out of Australia as ​often as you want

Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186)

The Australian Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) grants permanent residence to skilled workers who are sponsored by an Australian employer. The Employer Nomination Scheme is specifically designed to enhance Australia’s ability to compete globally while satisfying genuine shortages in the labour market.

ENS Visa Basic Requirements

You might be able to get this visa if you:

  • have been nominated by an approved Australian employer within the six months before you apply
  • are under the age of 50 at the time of application, if you are applying under the Temporary Residence stream, or are under the age of 45 if you are applying under the Direct Entry stream
  • have the required skills and qualifications for the position (at time of application lodgement you must have the required skills and qualifications for the position you have been nominated for – you must hold any mandatory registration, license or professional membership, or you must already be fully assessed as suitable by the relevant body)
  • have appropriate English language skills (at the time of application lodgement)
  • meet health and character requirements
  • meet the requirements of the stream in which you apply

ENS Visa Entitlement:

Successful visa applicants become permanent residents of Australia

You and your whole family are entitled to live, work and study in Australia on a permanent basis

Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187)

The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa (subclass 187) is for skilled workers who want to work in regional Australia.

You can apply for this visa only after you have been nominated by an employer in regional Australia – this means an area that is not in the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong and Melbourne.

RSMS Visa Basic Requirements

You might be able to get this visa if you:

  • have been nominated by an approved Australian employer in regional Australia (outside of the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong and Melbourne) within six months before you apply
  • are under the age of 50, if you are applying under the Temporary Residence stream, or are under the age of 45, if you are applying under the Direct Entry stream.
  • at time of application lodgement, have the required skills and qualifications for the position you have been nominated for – you must hold any mandatory registration, license or professional membership, or you must already be fully assessed as suitable by the relevant body
  • at time of application lodgement, have appropriate English language skills for Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream and Direct Entry (DE) stream.
  • meet health and character requirements
  • meet the requirements of the stream in which you apply
